Meet The Filmmakers, Joshua LaBure & Zach Gutierrez, “A Week Without a Bicycle”

Processed with VSCOcam with b5 preset

Whether it is rocking out films or kicking 360’s on the ramps, you will find Josh & Zach and I was fortunate enough to pedal them down on my Huffy like the kid from “Better Off Dead” long enough to have them answer a few questions for us.

MM: Why did you become a filmmaker?

Josh: I have always loved film! There is nothing quite like a movie that really gets under your skin and makes you feel something. I love sharing stories and making people laugh at uncomfortable situations, but mostly I love making and sharing stories that people can relate with.

Zach: I saw Frankenstein (1931) when I was five. The very same day, I told my mom that I was going to make movies for a living and I’ve been working towards that goal ever since.

MM: What are we going to see at the EFP? Has it screened elsewhere and what are your plans for it?

The film you are going to see is a narrative short called “A Week Without A Bicycle” which takes a glance at a former couple’s first conversation post-breaking up.

We have had a private screening for our friends and it’s on our Vimeo page.

We plan on showing this film anywhere we can and hopefully gaining interest for our upcoming feature film.

MM: What else are you working on?

We are currently working on making our first feature film that begins shooting in May called Something Along the Lines of Dating, a slice of life comedy/drama about a recently dumped man who meets his dream girl, only to have his ex come back into the picture.

MM: Tell us one weird thing about you and/or your movies?

Josh: I don’t know if this is weird, but most of my films, including this one, consist of a written story but the dialogue is mostly improv and they are often word for word conversations I have had with exes in the past, with it sometimes happening completely on accident.

Zach: I work as a tattoo artist by day, and interestingly, it has informed my work with directing and cinematography more than I could ever have imagined.

MM: Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

weekendfilmsco.tumblr.com

MM: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?

Josh: I have shown a couple of short film at EFP before and I just love that this community exists! I look forward to seeing all of the other films playing and getting to know this community even more!

Zach – Truth be told, I had never heard about EFP until Josh submitted our film, but as I was looking into it I found that my old film school friends have been showcasing their work there for years. I’m excited to see what the Denver film scene has to offer.

MM: Thank you Josh and Zach for taking the time to chat.

“A Week Without a Bicycle” will screen at the April 17th Emerging Filmmakers Project!

Meet the Filmmaker: Lauryn Guerrieri, “Square”

me

While sitting in another boring lecture I decided to change things up a bit and meet up with Lauryn to see what is going on in her busy life.  FYI – The answer is always “C”… you’re welcome!

MM: Why did you become a filmmaker?

LG: I never actively decided I wanted to be a filmmaker, it just sort of happened to me! I started with my parent’s handicam filming barbies and my siblings at the age of 10. I took classes in middle school and high school, making video projects whenever I could. And then I decided to major in film in college and here I am today! I became a filmmaker because I wanted to have a job that I loved.

MM: What else are you working on?

LG: I am finishing up my very last semester this upcoming Spring! I will be working on one short narrative and one short documentary. Besides that, we have many client projects we do at Liquid Luck! We are currently wrapping up a promo for a Discovery Channel show.

MM: Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

LG: Most of our work is on our facebook page: facebook.com/liquidluckp. And our videos are on vimeo: vimeo.com/liquidluck

MM: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?

LG: Support local film!

MM: Thanks Lauryn for taking the time to chat!

Square will screen at the April Emerging Filmmakers Project.

Meet the Filmmaker: John Lindquist, “The Lazy Jedi”

TLJ EFP
While taking a break from rescuing Princess Leia from Jaba the Hutt, I caught up with John for a sit down at Mos Eisley Cantina… Spoiler Alert: Luke… I am not your father even though I am incredible with a light saber.

MM: Why did you become a filmmaker?

JL: I’ve always loved films and the unique way they combine art and technology in the service of telling a story.  I particularly enjoy editing and being able to mold a film into its final shape.

MM: What are we going to see at the EFP? Has it screened elsewhere and what are your plans for it?

JL: This is our Star Wars parody, focused on the misadventures of someone who has absolutely no business being a Jedi.  We wanted to learn more about visual effects so we combined live action, stop-motion, and footage from the Star Wars films to create the first two installments for our Digital Effects classes a few years ago at the University of Colorado Denver; we recently completed the third episode on our own.  This screening combines the first three entries into a single narrative.

MM: What else are you working on?

JL: We are currently working on a short horror-comedy film.

MM: Tell us one weird thing about you and/or your movies?

JL: We previously worked on a ridiculous Western comedy series starring live cats.

MM: Meow where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

MM: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?

JL: It’s a great way for filmmakers to get the word out and show their work.  Thanks to everyone involved!

MM:  Thank you John for taking the time to talk with me and yes… Han shot first!!  You heard it here… we saw it!!
