Meet the Filmmakers: The Nix Bros, “Love to Hate”

Love to Hate | www.nixbros.com

1238754_515489691863596_1273274179_nMeet The Nix Bros. Made up of one half Evan Nix and one half Adam Nix, The Nix Bros reside among Denver’s most prolific and respected filmmakers. Whether you know them for their short films, their music videos, or their work with The Grawlix, chances are you’ve seen a Nix Bros film, and chances are you enjoyed it.

The Nix Bros will be screening their film Love to Hate at the February EFP. Created for the 2013 Denver 48 Hour Film Project, Love to Hate won Best of Denver, Best Editing, Best Actress (Kristin Rand), the and Audience Award for screening block D. Eileen recently sat down with the two to discuss the film and the other projects they currently have in the works.

EA: Why did you become a filmmaker?

NB: We were always interested in art, acting and music, and film/video combines all those things.

EA: What are we going to see at the EFP? Has it screened elsewhere and what are your plans for it?

NB: We’re screening our 48 Hour Film Love To Hate which won Best of Denver last October, and will be screening next month at Filmapalooza in New Orleans.

EA: What else are you working on?

NB: Always writing and shooting short comedies. This week we are working a funny web commercial for Illegal Pete’s with Denver comedy group The Grawlix.

EA: Tell us one weird thing about you and/or your movies?

NB: We are in a fake German electro-pop supergroup that performs all around town and we shoot all of their music videos.

EA: Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

NB: nixbros.com

EA: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?

NB: For a decade Denver has been a better place for filmmakers and artists because of EFP. We screen our stuff here several times a year and love that we have such an accessible way to get our hard work in front of a living, breathing audience.

Love to Hate will screen February 20th at The Emerging Filmmakers Project.

Meet the Filmmaker: Patrick Friedauer, “I Do”

I Dowww.facebook.com/3rdFloorFilms

Me (1)Meet Patrick Friedauer.  Patrick will be attending the February EFP with his short film I Do, which was created for the 2013 Denver 48 Hour Film Project and screened at the year’s Best of Screening.

EA: Why did you become a filmmaker?

PF: I’ve always loved movies. Making them sounded like the ultimate challenge. Listening to an audience react to something you create is why I’ll keep making more.

EA: What are we going to see at the EFP? Has it screened elsewhere and what are your plans for it?

PF: It screened at the 48 Hour Film Denver including the Best of Screening where our star Marty Lindsey won Best Actor! And that is what you are going to see. A stellar performance by a very talented local actor.

EA: What else are you working on?

PF: Nothing worth announcing. We do plan on being at the 48 Hour Film Project again this year.

EA: Tell us one weird thing about you and/or your movies?

PF: Is it weird that I have nothing weird to say?

EA: Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

PF: You can find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/3rdFloorFilms

Or on Vimeo at http://vimeo.com/channels/3rdfloorfilms

EA: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?

PF: Thanks for inviting us. And for providing a place for local film to be shared.

I Do will screen February 20th at The Emerging Filmmakers Project.

Meet the Filmmaker: Guillermo Roques, “Eugene & Anastasia Lovestory”

Eugene & Anastasia Lovestory | https://vimeo.com/errequeerrevideos

PoqWARXWxR2R0wrIs7uKQh7LzIZ_60uzqd_LJpM9G_oMeet Guillermo Roques. Guillermo will be screening Eugene & Anastasia Lovestory, a short film starring married couple Eugene and Anastasia, at the February EFP. Eileen sat down with him in advance of the screening to learn more about his unique film and discuss the other projects he currently has in the works.

EA: Why did you become a filmmaker?

GR: I consider myself more a scriptwriter than a filmmaker. But, because of my origins (Spain) and the lack of a solid cinematographic industry in that country, I had to start filming on my own to see how the stories looked like in a real screen. That was about 8 years ago. After that I’ve become more involved with filmmaking, mostly documentaries.

EA: What are we going to see at the EFP? Has it screened elsewhere and what are your plans for it?

GR: Eugene & Anastasia Lovestory was a request done by Eugene and Anastasia. They were going to get married last year and they asked me to film a short story with them, so they could screen it during the wedding. I sent them 3 different storylines. They picked up one. I sent them the final script and then we shot in one day and a half . I had to edit it in one week.
Maybe the most curious thing about this video is that Eugene and Anastasia are originally from Russia; I’m from Spain, as well as the other two crew members that worked on the video (Rosa, as scriptwriter, and Luisa, as producer assistant). We tried to film it in an American style and was based in Denver. So you could easily consider this short-film as a Spain-Russia-USA co-production.

EA: What else are you working on?

GR: Right now I´m working on a documentary with a local photographer (Greg Friedler), and trying to adapt to an “American context” a few scripts awarded back in Spain.

EA: Tell us one weird thing about you and/or your movies?

GR: I usually work with really small crews. Sometimes just by myself. I love all kind of cinematographies (classic Hollywood cinema, South-korean mainstream movies, Neo-realism, Romanian, Check, Greek movies, subjective documentaries -like Mekas or Marker, etc). I think that cinema is a universal language but also a very diverse language. For me, this is one of the best things about it. That´s the reason why some of my works differ so much one from another. I would love to express myself in as many diverse ways as cinema language allows.

EA: Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

GR: I don´t have a website. I have some of my most recent stuff uploaded in vimeo. For example this two documentaries: https://vimeo.com/76120048 and https://vimeo.com/28949002.

EA: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?

GR: I think that The Emerging Filmmakers Project is a great initiative. It is always refreshing to see what everybody else is doing and to network with people that have the same interests and the same passion.

Eugene & Anastasia Lovestory will screen February 20th at The Emerging Filmmakers Project.

Meet the Filmmaker: Clayton Garthe, “Read Between the Signs”

Read Between the Signs

Meet Clayton Garthe.  Clayton will be premiering his film Read Between The Signs at the February EFP.  Eileen recently sat down with him to discuss the film and the other projects he currently has in the works.

EA: Why did you become a filmmaker?
CG: It was the only answer to the question, Why do I put so much effort into random scripts and stories that will never be told?

EA: What are we going to see at the EFP? Has it screened elsewhere and what are your plans for it?
CG: Read Between The Signs is a love story, it has not been screened elsewhere but we hope to show it at some local festivals.

EA: What else are you working on?
CG: Medical School. But I have a couple other short scripts in the works.

EA: Tell us one weird thing about you and/or your movies?
CG: When I’m developing characters and their arcs, I often imagine myself or my loved ones dying their deaths.

EA: Is there anything you’d like to say about The Emerging Filmmakers Project?
CG: I love that it exists and I’m grateful to be involved.

Read Between the Signs will screen February 20th at The Emerging Filmmakers Project.
